Overview
Two-step fleet washing is the industry-standard method for cleaning trucks, trailers, and heavy equipme nt. Using a Step #1 acid-based cleaner followed by a Step #2 degreaser or general-purpose soap, operators can remove oxidation, grime, road film, diesel soot, and grease more efficiently than with a single wash.
This guide covers chemical selection, equipment setup, application, and safety practices for both manual and automated systems, including remote control operation and low-pressure downstream injection.
Step 1 – Chemical Selection
Step #1: Acid-Based Cleaner
Purpose: Loosens oxidation, road film, and mineral buildup on unpolished aluminum or other hard surfaces.
Recommended Products:
- Glacier – Aluminum brightener for unpolished surfaces
- Hurricane – Maximum-strength acid cleaner for heavy grime
Key Points:
- Only use on non-polished aluminum unless specified.
- Follow dilution instructions closely to avoid surface damage.
- Test on a small area if unsure of the surface type.
Step #2: Choosing the Right Soap / Degreaser
Purpose: Removes oils, grease, bug residue, and remaining dirt after the acid step.
How to Choose:
- Surface TypePolished aluminum / chrome / show trucks: Use polish-safe soaps like Magic or Dome.Non-polished aluminum or industrial vehicles: Use heavy-duty degreasers like Beartooth or Yellowstone.
- Cleaning NeedsHeavy grease & road grime: Strong degreasing soaps like Beartooth.General dirt, bug residue, or frequent washes: Gentle but effective soaps like Magic or Yellowstone.
- Application MethodFoam cannon / high-foaming applications: Polish-safe soaps work well for aesthetic-focused vehicles.Pump sprayer / spot cleaning: Heavy-duty degreasers excel at localized, tough grime removal.
Key Points:
- Always match the soap to the surface and dirt type.
- Follow dilution instructions for optimal cleaning and surface protection.
- Step #2 is critical for rinsing away residual acid and grime.
Step 2 – Equipment Setup
1. Two-Step Pressure Washer Gun
- Switches between Step #1 and Step #2 chemicals without walking back to the tanks.
- Ensures smooth transitions and consistent chemical application.
2. Low-Pressure Downstream Injector Kit
- Quick-connect system for applying Step #1 and Step #2 soaps using low pressure.
- Includes injector, soap tips, chemical selector, quick-connects, soap lines, and chemical drop sticks.
- Pre-configured for your washer’s GPM and PSI.
3. Remote Wireless Control System
- Toggle between acid and soap from anywhere on site.
- Reduces physical strain and increases workflow efficiency.
- Compatible with downstream injectors or pre-wired two-step setups.
Step 3 – Washing Process
- Prepare the VehicleRinse loose dirt and debris.Inspect surfaces for sensitive areas.
- Apply Step #1 CleanerUse acid-based cleaner for unpolished surfaces.Apply evenly using a two-step gun, downstream injector, or remote system.Allow dwell time (1–3 minutes).Do not let the chemical dry.
- Rinse Step #1Rinse with clean water or Step #2 soap immediately.Remove all acid residues.
- Select & Apply Step #2 SoapChoose the soap based on surface type and soil level (see Step 1 guidance).Apply with two-step gun, downstream injector, foam cannon, or pump sprayer.Agitate lightly if needed for tough grime.
- Final RinseRinse thoroughly with high-pressure water.Inspect surfaces for missed spots or residue.
- Optional Protectant / Spray WaxApply to polished surfaces for shine and water sheeting.
Step 4 – Safety & Best Practices
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Chemical-resistant gloves, boots, and clothing
- Eye protection or full-face shield
Chemical Safety
- Always read the MSDS for all products used.
- Store chemicals in labeled, secure containers.
- Use correct dilution ratios to avoid surface damage or injury.
- Never mix incompatible chemicals.
Operational Safety
- Avoid letting Step #1 acids dry.
- Keep hoses and workspace clear of obstacles.
- Inspect hoses, tips, and injectors for wear before use.
- Protect sensitive electronics and polished surfaces.
Ergonomics & Efficiency
- Use remote controls or downstream injectors to reduce repetitive walking.
- Maintain a steady workflow for consistent coverage.
Step 5 – Maintenance & Cleanup
- Rinse hoses, wands, and injectors after use.
- Flush downstream injectors to prevent clogging.
- Store chemicals according to manufacturer instructions.
- Inspect equipment for wear and replace worn parts promptly.
Equipment Checklist
- Pressure washer (appropriate GPM & PSI)
- Two-step injection gun or downstream injector kit
- Remote wireless chemical selector (optional)
- Step #1 acid cleaner (Glacier, Hurricane)
- Step #2 soap / degreaser (Beartooth, Yellowstone, Magic)
- Spray wax / rinse agent (optional)

Safety & MSDS
Always consult the MSDS for each chemical used. Follow all handling, PPE, and storage recommendations to ensure safe, effective operation and protection of personnel and equipment.
